Above is a link to a video on youtube about Adderall and a similar ADD/ADHD drug Ritalin, and their use on college campuses.

At first, Adderall was only being used by kids and teenagers who could not concentrate in school and were causing disruption in classes. This continued for a few years until people who did not have ADD or ADHD discovered that if one did not have the disorder, the drug would cause the reverse affect. Instead of calming them down, it gave them energy and the ability to not sleep at night. High school and college students realized that it was somewhat of a miracle pill. They could get all of their work finished much faster because of the increase in energy, concentration, and the decrease in distractions. Students began going online and finding out the symptoms they needed to have to actually have the disorder. Next, they would go to their doctor and list the symptoms they found online. Due to the fact that the only test to prescribe Adderall is a list of verbal questions and interviews, the doctors had no idea that they were being lied to by their patients. As word got out about the new miracle pill, more and more students began claiming that they had the disorder. Eventually, those who could not get the prescription began bumming pills off their friends who had it. Every now and then when they had a big test or long paper to write they would just ask a friend for a pill or two.

From first glance the use of the pill seems harmless but with the realization that Adderall was the perfect pill to take while drinking in order to stay up late partying, the pill became even more popular. Adderal contains amphetamine, which is also known for its use in clubs to increase stamina and help users stay up until late morning hours.

At The University of Pennsylvania, a student explained that when she uses Adderall to study she takes it orally, but when she takes it before a night out, she will snort it. She snorts it the same way and for the same reasons as someone would snort the drug cocaine. Cocaine, like Adderall, causes an increase in energy, decreased appetite, and an increased heart rate. The difference between cocaine and Adderall is that cocaine is highly illegal and Adderall is becoming increasingly available. Although cocaine is a much more dangerous drug, Adderall is like a weaker version, which is just as scary.

As the use of Adderall becomes more common, it’s trafficking will only increase. Right now, one out of every five students who has used Adderall, received the medication without a prescription. Students already buy and sell Adderall pills on campus, but eventually they will be getting the drug in powder form and selling it similar to the way cocaine is sold. Due to the fact that it is so easy to get a prescription to, students will continue to believe that it is not a harmful drug. It is claimed that with time Adderall users will no longer be dependant on the drug, yet as time goes on a higher and higher dosage is necessary for the user to get the same effect. Now isn't that a little too ironic?
